Star Wars: Episode IX Adds Doctor Who's Matt Smith

Back in late July, Star Wars: Episode IX delivered an announcement revealing what appeared to be the full cast for the blockbuster - featuring both expected names, and a few new ones. Since then, however, the project has continued to add actors to its roster, and today we have word that yet another talented performer has come on-board. According to a new report, Doctor Who star Matt Smith is now set to play a part in the new J.J. Abrams-directed chapter of the legendary sci-fi saga.

Variety is reporting the news of the casting, but sadly doesn't seem to have much info about his character - including whether or not he will be on the side of the heroes or the villains. This really isn't too surprising, however, given the level of secrecy that surrounds the project. Matt Smith is one of a few new names that are joining the Star Wars franchise for the trilogy-capper, as it's been previously said that Star Wars: Episode IX will include Richard E. Grant, Keri Russell, and Naomi Ackie. Those set to reprise their roles from previous installments include include Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, and Billie Lourd, as well as Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Billy Dee Williams. The movie will also be repurposing footage of Carrie Fisher from Star Wars: The Force Awakens will also be repurposed so that Princess/General Leia Organa will have a role to play.

As mentioned above, Matt Smith is definitely no stranger to the science-fiction genre, as he was the actor picked to succeed David Tennant as The Doctor on the BBC's long-running series Doctor Who. He played the part from 2010 to 2014 - when he was replaced by Peter Capaldi - but that didn't bring his work with narrative timey-wimey stuff to an end. He also had a key supporting role in Alan Taylor's Terminator Genisys, playing essentially the manifestation of Skynet, but that didn't go super well.

Star Wars: Episode IX, which does not yet have an official title, is currently in production, and as of right now we really don't know what it will be about. At the end of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Resistance was barely surviving - rescued by Rey with her blossoming Jedi powers - and Kylo Ren had replaced Supreme Leader Snoke as the leader of the First Order. It's even unclear right now exactly where the story will pick up, as Rian Johnson's film notably began right where Star Wars: The Force Awakens left off. Sadly, that information probably won't be known for at least a few more months. DC Storyboard Artist Says Zack Snyders 5-Movie Run Would Have Been Unforgettable

Cinematic history is filled with countless compelling 'What-ifs.' What if Will Smith played Neo in The Matrix instead of Keanu Reeves? What if Robert Zemeckis, Ron Howard or Steven Spielberg directed Star Wars: The Phantom Menace? These questions are fun to think about as we ponder what might have been. One of the latest 'What-ifs' that is being shouted to the heavens by many fans is 'What if Zack Snyder had stayed on as a director and main shepherd of Warner Bros. DC Extended Universe?' Many fans want to know how Zack Snyder's vision would have played out and what it would have looked like. We will never know for sure, but DC storyboard artist Jay Oliva has given us an idea, dubbing the five-movie run as "unforgettable":

Responding to a discussion on Twitter about the DC universe films and Zack Snyder's planned story arc for them, Jay Oliva's answer here certainly won't quell the demands of many fans for Warner Bros. to release the Snyder cut of Justice League. These adjectives are enticing and make you wonder just how different Zack Snyder's vision would have been than the current DCEU and what would have made it so unforgettable. Words like mythic and epic were used to describe Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice leading up to its release, and regardless of your feelings about that film, you can definitely see that was the tone Zack Snyder was going for. Jay Oliva's words also make it clear that he was very much in favor of what Zack Snyder wanted to do.

Another thing that is conveyed here is that Jay Oliva found Zack Snyder's planned five-movie run to be joyful. That is interesting because a lack of joy and humor was one of the criticisms of Batman v Superman, with many finding it to be grim and joyless. So perhaps Zack Snyder's arc was not all quite as dreary as that film, and hope and joy became a part of the films later on. That is another thing that is noteworthy: Zack Snyder had a plan. One of the complaints about the DCEU post-Batman v Superman is that there doesn't seem to be an overarching vision or plan. Now whether Zack Snyder's plan would have taken the DCEU into a more critically and commercially successful place is up for debate, but it sounds like the director had already laid out where he want to go.

As with many of these alternate history questions, it would be nice to find out for sure what might have been. Like George Lucas' original sequel trilogy plans, it would just be great to know, for better or worse, where Zack Snyder would have taken the DCEU and its characters, just to sate our curiosity.

Zack Snyder's nextproject is expected to see him stepping out of the superhero realm for the war movie The Last Photograph. As for the DCEU, we have Aquaman directed by James Wan in theaters on December 21. It's a good time to be a Star Wars fan. With Disney now in charge of the property, there are new additions to the galaxy far, far away every year or so. In addition to main installments, Star Wars is breaking new ground by releasing standalone movies as well. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story helped bridge the gap between the prequel trilogy and A New Hope, while also bringing back classic characters like Darth Vader, Leia, and Grand Moff Tarkin. Solo: A Star Wars Story will arrive shortly to expand the backstory of everyone's favorite smuggler. The movie will also feature a younger Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian, with the latter being played by Donald Glover. Glover recently treated fans to a tour of Lando's Millennium Falcon, where he revealed an entire room just for capes. Check it out.

Lando Calrissian has always had style, and the Falcon is looking extra fly while it's under his control. While Star Wars movies don't typically have a ton of action within the ship's cabin, Solo: A Star Wars Story will show more of its nooks and crannies. Lando has it all decked out, especially his private quarters. This includes a walk in closet completely full of capes. The character's penchant for the over the top costume piece is part of what makes him iconic, so seeing the array of accessories is going to be great for OG Star Wars fans out there.

The video tour shows the different types of Capes at Lando's disposal, and I couldn't help but think of Batman in those moments. But rather than being bulletproof or allowing him to glide through the air, Lando is interested in style than substance-- at least when we meet him in Solo. Ultimately he ends up being one of the original franchise's fan favorite characters, starting as an antagonist before eventually siding with the light in the Galactic War.

Solo: A Star Wars Story will show how Harrison Ford's signature character first met both Land and Chewbacca, who would both grow to become important figures in the smuggler's life. In addition to fleshing out those three original heroes, it will also introduce newcomers with Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, and Thandie Newton filling out the cast. Considering Lando's current state within the main Star Wars franchise, his role in Solo: A Star Wars Story seems like one that fans are looking forward to. Lando hasn't been seen or even mentioned during either The Force Awakens or The Last Jedi, to the dismay of the fandom. The latter originally seemed like a logical choice, as Lando originally popped up in the second film of the original trilogy. But Rian Johnson crafted a capsulated story that Lando didn't fit in, leaving J.J. Abrams to at least mention the caped hero during Episode IX.
