Jason Momoa's Honest Reason Why Aquaman Won't Have Major DC Cameos

When Jason Momoa's Aquaman debuted in last year's Justice League, he did along the rest of the superhero team. So right out of the gate, Aquaman was woven into the fabric of the larger world opposite these other heroes. That being the case, you might expect that for his first solo film, other major heroes would be showing up at least for cameos. However, that will not be the case in James Wan's Aquaman. So is the lack of cameos some story point we can read into? Nope, turns out that it's because superheroes charge hefty appearance fees. Jason Momoa explained why Aquaman won't have major DC cameos, saying:

I think it would cost a lot of money, probably. I don't think we got it in the budget. But, I think it would be great. At some point, I'm pretty sure, y'know, if this does well and if that does well...Probably, the same thing that happened with Marvel, you know what I mean?

You might not expect this level of honesty to this question, but speaking to CinemaBlend's own Eric Eisenberg and other journalists during the Aquaman set visit, Jason Momoa is quite matter of fact about the reality of the situation. Simply put, the more big name actors who have parts in the film, even cameos, the more it costs. Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot don't come cheap. These movies don't have unlimited budgets, and perhaps for the folks at WB, DC and James Wan, they felt that money was better spent elsewhere. After all, two-thirds of this movie takes place underwater, which is a huge amount. I'm sure that those effects aren't easy or cheap and having underwater scenes look good is critical to a movie called Aquaman.

This doesn't mean that these kinds of cameos can't happen in the future of course. Jason Momoa notes that future cameos are presumably predicated on the success of Aquaman. Just like Marvel, box office and critical performance allows for higher budgets, which in turn allows for more cameos as the DCEU grows. So should that happen, Jason Momoa is hoping some of his superheroic buddies might pop up in a sequel.

The Marvel model has basically conditioned us to now expect crossovers and cameos in comic book movies, to remind us that the film takes place in a larger cinematic universe. But just because that is now commonplace doesn't mean that it is always necessary or even beneficial. This is Aquaman's story and the focus should be on him and Atlantis. The majority of the movie takes place underwater, and we don't really need to see Batman break out the dive suit to come help out. Aquaman was already established as a part of the wider world in Justice League, so better not to shoehorn in cameos and just let Aquaman's story play out on its own without too much focus on universe-sharing. So in this case, I think budgetary constraints may prove to be a good thing for the overall story.

Sounds Like Sylvester Stallone Helps Out A Lot On Set Of The Creed Movies

Creed II marks the ninth appearance of Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa. Now a retired Heavyweight Champion, Rocky trained the son of his foe-turned-friend Apollo Creed, giving a Stallone a supporting role in the new franchise. The film's star Michael B. Jordan recently said he still played a vital role this round in ensuring Creed II looked authentic on screen. In Jordan's words:

He mastered the art of boxing movies. We lean on him very heavily to make those boxing sequences and those fights authentic and really maximize those moments. We look into the corner for his approval. 'Is that good? Is that not good?' But still, as a filmmaker...he's really involved as much as we need him, but he also allowed Steven to do his thing. It was a really good collaboration.

Sylvester Stallone has had an incredibly hands-on role in the Rocky franchise as the writer and star of the first six films, along with directing half of them as well. He stepped back from behind the camera for the most recent insallments, with Black Panther's Ryan Coogler to co-write and direct Creed in 2015.

After the franchise revival hit the mark at the box office and among critics, it wasn't a surprise that we'd see Adonis Creed and Rocky Balboa team up again for another big fight. Creed II has Sylvester Stallone reprising his role and going back to writing, as screenwriter with Juel Taylor and 30-year-old Steven Caple Jr. as director.

It's great to hear that Sylvester Stallone could strike a balance on set as a collaborator, who could offer his advice and expertise on making a Rocky flick while also letting some new blood take the reins. If you had the most Rocky expert there is at your disposal, it would be a shame not to utilize him while also bringing something new to the table cinematically. Director Steven Caple Jr. also weighed in about the dynamic between him and Stallone on set to Entertainment Weekly. In his words:

[He] had cool creative input that I felt was very helpful in the sense of he's done this for so long that he has a format that just works. He has more experience with Creed. I spoke to Ryan Coogler about it [and] he was saying the same thing. 'He's a collaborator. He was passionate. I don't know how he's going to be on yours, but he definitely had a passion to revive it.' Then when I spoke to [Stallone], I was like, this dude's passion is still on level 100 when it comes to being a character and telling this story.

Creed II follows Adonis Creed as he is faced with the opportunity of sharing the ring with the song of Dolph Lundgren's Ivan Drago, Viktor Drago played by Florian Munteanu. Fans will remember these names from Rocky IV when Drago killed Rocky's friend Creed in the famous fictional fight in 1985.

The sequel sets up some deeply personal stakes for Adonis, who is caught between the desire for redemption and the contention between Rocky and his family to go through with it and fight Viktor Drago.

Sylvester Stallone has could step back and allow younger filmmakers to tell the story of Adonis Creed, because he believes it's important to have a director to speak for this generation as he did for his. While the backbone of Creed II may have some similarities to the Rocky franchise, it's good to have it made through the eyes of another and with Stallone by his side. Creed II hits theaters on Wed. November 21.

MoviePass Shut Off Briefly After Company Ran Out Of Cash

If you were trying to use your MoviePass subscription to check out Mission: Impossible - Fallout last night and found the app not working, you weren't alone. On Thursday MoviePass experienced a service interruption that made it impossible for subscribers to access the service. This morning MoviePass parent company Helios and Matheson Analytics revealed that it had to borrow $5 million to make some necessary payments. Essentially, MoviePass went down because it ran out of money.

Specifically, the required payments MoviePass needed to make were to merchant and fulfillment processors, or the companies that process MoviePass transactions. Without payment, those transactions stop and nobody can use the MoviePass debit card that purchases the tickets. This makes that payment pretty important since the entire business model shuts down without it.

While it seems that the MoviePass app is now up and running for some, there are still some reports of the app not working this morning, so you may still run into issues if you're planning on hitting the theater today.

This is certainly not good news as it indicated that MoviePass is in a pretty bad financial position at the moment. If it cant make these fairly standard payments through the normal course of business then MoviePass clearly isn't making enough money. While over a million people are currently MoviePass subscribers, the fact is that unless a majority of them don't use the service, MoviePass losses money on those customers that do. This was expected, as Helios and Matheson Analytics is a data company and it was expected that the real value in MoviePass was in its customer data, but it seems that even that hasn't been as lucrative as it was supposed to be.

This is just the latest piece of bad business news for MoviePass and its parent company. Business Insider points out that the company recently initiated a reverse stock split as a way of bringing its share price up from the $.09 that it was up to $14 per share. However, from there shares have continued to drop and they started the morning at $6 a share. It's unlikely this news is going to do anything to instill investor confidence.

It's anybody's guess what happens from here. While the $5 million loan will hopefully keep the company going for a while, if nothing changes MoviePass will simply spend that money while continuing to see not enough come in. Perhaps this was just a stop-gap measure while MoviePass waited to see enough revenue come from new policies like the new surge pricing to make up the difference. If not, expect to see MoviePass make some major changes in the short term as they continue to look for ways to make the low price subscription model work.
