Zack Snyder Has Blunt Words For Any Fans Mad That Batman Killed Someone

Whatever your view of Zack Snyder's DC superhero movies, there's little argument that his particular take on Batman and Superman would qualify as "non-traditional." One specific way that Snyder broke with previous versions of the character was when he made a version of Batman who had no problem with actually killing people, a line that the character traditionally would not cross in modern films and comics.

However, at a recent Q&A following a screening of Snyder's earlier comic book movie, Watchmen, the director made it clear that he has little sympathy for people who took issue with his version of the classic DC characters, as seen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, as he feels they made sense for a modern comic book movie. According to Snyder...

Someone says to me 'Oh Batman killed a guy.' I'm like 'Really?' I'm like 'Wake the fuck up.' ... I guess that's what I'm saying about, once you've like lost your virginity to this fucking movie and then you come say to me something about like 'Oh my superhero wouldn't do that.' I'm like 'Are you serious' I'm down the fucking road on that. And it's a cool point of view. Look, I'm 100% fine, it's a cool point of view to be like 'My heroes are still innocent. My heroes didn't lie to America. My heroes didn't embezzle money from their corp, my heroes didn't commit any atrocities.' That's cool, but you're living in a fucking dream world, OK?

Snyder's comments at least make it clear where he was coming from in creating his version of the DC Universe. His earlier film Watchman, and the comic it was based on, argued that if superheroes were real, they would not be the paragon of virtue we're used to seeing in comic books. Snyder believes this idea so strongly that he carried it over to characters like Batman and Superman. He thinks viewing any sort of hero with that sort of idolization is akin to living in a dream world. Everybody has flaws and that should be understood.

While many might agree, the response on Reddit, where Snyder's comments were posted, is largely negative. Many feel that while a story like Watchmen has its place, Batman is something quite different and should be treated as such. Batman's decision not to kill his enemies is a key aspect of the character, and if you change it, he's simply not Batman anymore.

Of course, there's really no right answer to questions like these. There will always be fans of the traditional view of any character with a history as long as the one Batman has. Changes and new interpretations will always happen, but exactly what aspects of the character are immutable won't always be agreed upon. A Batman willing to kill certainly opens up interesting ideas to be explored that wouldn't be there with a more traditional iteration of the character.

One Key Way Mortal Engines Is Changing From The Book, According To Peter Jackson

One Key Way Mortal Engines Is Changing From The Book, According To Peter Jackson

Mortal Engines is a film that has been in the works since 2009 -- and any movie developing for that long is going to go through some significant changes. Sure, the project is ultimately based on the novel source material by author Philip Reeve, but the feature has evolved like any story in order to make the best adaptation possible. Obsessive fans will surely notice the smaller alterations when the finished product is screened later this year, but it should be recognized there is one key difference that everyone can prepare for now: the main characters are significantly older. Or as producer/writer Peter Jackson puts it,

We've changed the book a bit in places. We've aged it up. The book is written for quite a young audience, to some degree, you know? And I just don't think anybody wants to see another teenage dystopian movie any time soon. So, it's one of the reasons why we've aged it sort of up, and we cast it a bit older. Tom and Hester in the book are younger... We had made it a little bit more adult.

In the books, first published in 2001, heroes Tom Natsworthy and Hester Shaw are written as teenage protagonists -- but because Hollywood has sufficiently driven teenager-led dystopian fiction into the ground, Mortal Engines decided to make an important change in that arena. Instead, the characters will be portrayed as (for lack of a better term) young adults, making the film more mature than its source material. So when you see the 30-year-old Robert Sheehan and Hera Hilmar playing those roles on the big screen later this year, don't be confused and think they are trying to appear half their age.

I actually learned about this significant change to Mortal Engines around this time last year, as I joined a small group of film journalists to visit the New Zealand set of project when production was still rolling. We had the pleasure of talking with the various members of the cast and crew over the duration of the trip, including a sit down with Peter Jackson. During that roundtable interview, he was asked if Philip Reeve suggested any changes to the material based on ideas he had writing the sequels -- and while Jackson said that wasn't the case, he did talk about some of the big ways the movie is different from the book.

After discussing the significant age changes, Peter Jackson then went on to talk about how the production has worked with Mortal Engines' author -- and he made it sound like Philip Reeve was very much kept in the look. Talking about the relationship, Jackson said,

In some respects it differs from the book in quite a few places, but not really [because Philip Reeve wanted to add something]. Although, Philip came out here, and we always send him script revisions as we do them, and he always seems to be very pleased with them. I think he, having written the four books that he did, he said that he wishes he could go back to the first one again and revise some parts of it - because you certainly see his confidence in the storytelling grows as these four books progress.

Directed by Christian Rivers, Mortal Engines is set in a world that has slowly rebuilt itself after nuclear war, with cities only able to survive by becoming mechanized and mobile -- devouring smaller cities/towns for resources and population growth. The story follows an apprentice historian named Tom (Robert Sheehan) as he gets caught up in an adventure with Hester (Hera Hilmar), a young woman who has learned a dark secret and is on a mission for revenge against one of society's most powerful figures, Thaddeus Valentine (Hugo Weaving).

We still have a while to wait for the arrival of Mortal Engines, with Universal scheduling it for release on December 14th -- but stay tuned to CinemaBlend between now and then for a whole lot more of our set visit coverage!

Alfonso Cuaron Defends Netflixs Roma, Says It's Unfair To Compare To A Theatrical Release

Big crowd pleasers like Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody may have dominated the Golden Globes last night; however, Netflix's Roma came through in a few key categories. In fact, Alfonso Cuaron won Best Director for the project, prompting one journalist to ask Cuaron how he felt about some distributors believing "that Roma's success signals the death of independent filmmakers." The director's answer was apt:

I think that it's very unfair to say that. Why don't you take the list of foreign films this year, and compare the theatrical release of those films, and for how long they've been playing? See how many are playing in 17 mill. See the territories in which this film is playing.

There have been some outspoken people in the industry who have spoken out against choosing streaming platforms instead of theatrical releases, including big names like Quentin Tarantino and Christopher Nolan. People who don't like the streaming platform have stated its aversion to keeping theaters in business as the main reason they aren't on board. However, to Alfonso Cuaron's way of thinking, it's unfair to compare the two mediums.

He went on in his talk to discuss how his very Mexican-oriented movie was filmed in "black and white" and also "in Spanish." He mentioned it has no stars and would likely never thrive in a regular theatrical release. In that context, he feels Roma is a good fit at Netflix.

I just hope the discussion between Netflix and platforms in general should be over. Think those guys, platforms and theatrical, should go together and just realize that whatever they are doing to this discussion is hurting cinema. They both together they can elevate cinema. And more important: they can create that diversity in cinema.

You can take a look at Alfonso Curaron's full answer (via Variety), below.

The subscription streaming service has started ramping up its efforts to produce original movies by big name directors. Martin Scorsese has a new movie coming in 2019. This year saw Alfonso Cuaron and Joel and Ethan Coen create titles for awards consideration on the streaming platform. (Roma has been more popular with critics than The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.)

Still, Netflix has a long way to go if it hopes to produce big budget titles rivaling what we see on the big screen. The streaming service has attempted to replicate or at least approximate the theatrical experience with movies like Bright, with mixed results.

At some point, it may turn out that Netflix becomes a great platform for the indie filmmaker while people continue to go to the theater for bigger, splashier kinds of spectacle. We'll have to wait and see how the system works in the future, but one thing is for certain: Movie theaters made more money than ever this year.

You can catch Roma on Netflix, now, or take a look at the full list of Golden Globes 2019 winners.

The Theory Of Everything's Eddie Redmayne Pays Tribute To Stephen Hawking

The Theory Of Everything's Eddie Redmayne Pays Tribute To Stephen Hawking

Stephen W. Hawking, brilliant physicist and Cambridge University staff member, died in the early hours of Wednesday morning, according to a spokesman from Cambridge University. He was 76 at the time of his death. In the hours since the news was first revealed, reactions from those whose lives Hawking touched have started to come out. In the early hours of the morning The Theory of Everything star Eddie Redmaybe paid tribute to the man he played on the big screen, noting,

We have lost a truly beautiful mind, an astonishing scientist and the funniest man I have ever had the pleasure to meet. My love and thoughts are with his extraordinary family.

Eddie Redmayne portrayed a young Stephen Hawking in the 2014 film The Theory of Everything, a film which picks up while Hawking is still a student at Cambridge University. The film spans the period of time when Hawking's muscles began to fail during the early years of his romance with Jane Wilde. He later lost the ability to talk and his marriage fell apart, which is when Hawking figured out how to write A Brief History of Time (which has now shot up to the top of the bestseller list) and romanced his second wife Elaine. In a statement to Deadline, Redmayne touched on meeting Stephen Hawking just before shooting The Theory of Everything and has said that he felt a little silly meeting Hawking, noting that he had "verbal diarrhea," and that he made an astrological sign goof in front of the famous scientist.

Still, Stephen Hawking had previously spoken out about Eddie Redmayne's performance, explaining he did feel The Theory of Everything was an authentic portrayal.

I thought Eddie Redmayne portrayed me very well in The Theory of Everything movie. He spent time with ALS sufferers so he could be authentic. At times, I thought he was me.

Following Eddie Redmayne's win for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking at the Academy Awards, the famous physicist also congratulated the actor for his work on the movie.

The Theory of Everything wasn't Hawking's only contribution to the world of pop culture, either. The man also dabbled in acting, having appeared in Star Trek: The Next Generation and The Big Bang Theory, as well as doing voice work for animated programs like The Simpsons. Eddie Redmayne isn't the only actor to have spoken out about Stephen Hawking's contributions to entertainment. The cast of The Big Bang Theory also spoke out about working with Hawking, with many of them noting his sense of humor in their posts. You can read more about those tributes, here. All in all, through all of Stephen Hawking's brilliant contributions to science and to to the realm of pop culture, he left his mark on the earth and will be missed by many.
